Thai Muslim girls stand as Thai Air force officers salute on Friday 03 December 2004 at the Thai Military airport in Bangkok, Thailand. The Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (not seen in the picture) was arriving to wave off 80 million paper birds. The birds, some of which are being held by the officers, were made all over the nation and were loaded into military aircraft ready to be dropped over the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani the following Sunday, the Thai King's birthday. They were to promote peace in the region, plagued at the time by increased violence.
